AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI) NUMBER REQUIREMENT

From 1 January 2015, the Australian Government requires all students undertaking Vocational Education and Training (VET) to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).  Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), including school RTOs, must have a valid USI for students before issuing a student with a qualification or statement of attainment.

If a student does not have a USI, the RTO cannot issue the qualification or statement of attainment.

A USI is a student's individual education number for life. It links information about a student's VET achievements, regardless of where they studied by providing an online record of vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia. Individuals enrolled at university, TAFE or completing other nationally recognised training, must have a USI. This makes it easier for students and RTOs to find and collate an individual's VET achievements.

A student requiring a USI will need to click here: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi.

SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS (SAT) PROGRAMS

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) allow high school students to combine working for an employer and training to obtain a recognised qualification towards completion of their secondary studies. SATs are available across a wide range of industries including, hospitality, business, retail, tourism, sport and trades.

A SAT can provide students with opportunities:

  • Obtaining a qualification and skills recognised Australia-wide. Upon completion, the qualification will count towards a student's Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)
  • Hands-on experiences in a work place
  • Paid employment
  • Development of employment and personal skills.

Students wishing to pursue a SAT should be prepared to make the following commitments:

  • Work one school day per week with an employer
  • Complete training and assessment as delivered by the RTO
  • Manage their academic subjects at school in order to complete their senior studies successfully
  • Attend school on all other school days
  • Advise all parties of any issues that may impact the completion of their SAT

Our school Industry Liaison Officer, Kirsty Saunders regularly communicates vacancies regarding different opportunities via email and social media. Alternatively, a student may procure an employer willing to engage in a SAT agreement on the basis they contact our Industry Liaison Officer, Kirsty Saunders to formalise any agreement in writing, in accordance with school and Queensland Government policies and procedures.
