Academic Excellence program
Year
8 and 9 Students
The
Academic Excellence program began in 2015 and involves high achieving students
in year 8 and 9 being enrolled in Academy classes in Mathematics, Science,
English and Humanities. The goal of this program is to extend our top 10% of
students and enable them to meet their potential and achieve at a high level.
Students
participating in this program will:
Be provided with differentiated learning tasks designed to extend
     high ability students

Be invited to attend academic enrichment activities and excursions

Have the opportunity to compete in competitions and challenge days.

Selection
in this program is based on:
Academic achievement in year 7 and year 8 in the core subjects of
     Mathematics, Science, English and History/Geography.

Achievement in diagnostic testing (NAPLAN, PAT-Maths, PAT-Reading
     and PAT-Science)

Input from classroom teachers

It is
expected that students who are participating in this program will:
Maintain high standards of academic achievement and behaviour

Participate in academic excellence activities

Keep up to date in all classwork, assignment work and homework

Challenge themselves to achieve their potential

The school is providing professional development for teachers
on academy classes so they:
Understand the attributes of gifted learners

Are able to provide strategies to cater for gifted students

Can design learning tasks and assessment items which extend high
     ability students

Each year selected students from year 9 academy classes have been enrolled in
accelerated programs so that they complete one or two year 11 subjects along
with the usual year 10 subjects.
